Artwork vs reference! I use references for almos

Artwork vs reference!

I use references for almost every part of my paintings – sometimes it still feels like photo-compositing, just with some extra steps in between. 😅 How closely I follow the reference varies, though – sometimes I even take my own photos, when I’m after a specific head angle or hand position, and sometimes I just find THE perfect pose and costume and see no reason to change the details.

And yes – I do have a (…slight) reference/stock pack buying addiction, but to be honest – since I started working on illustrated covers and children’s book illustrations, those resources have been in CONSTANT use.

If you’re looking for references, reliable sites where you can find awesome reference providers are Artstation and CubeBrush.

One portrait... in two different styles!

This was a trial illustration for a project that ended up not being continued, but it was still a fun experience, and it gave me an idea regarding how can I better show differences in illustration style/complexity to clients.

Right now I'm just using examples of my previous illustrations - which works, don't get me wrong. But having a series of small illustrations with one subject, in which each iteration has an increasing level of detail, would definitely be a plus - and it would be much easier for anyone interested in commisioning me to comprehend and compare different prices and timeframes.

One more thing to work into my schedule 😅 💪
