"Battle of Alta" was one of my favourites from last year - I remember, though, that I worked on it for quite a bit, and for a long while I couldn't figure out what was missing (in the end the dog turned out to be the missing ingredient). ⠀

From time to time though, I have whole days that are similar to that moment - days where nothing works right, I feel like my creativity level is below zero and trying to do anything feels like torture. I had a day like that yesterday - I sat in front of a screen for several hours trying to make brain do some actual work, and I only managed to make myself feel more frustrated. In the end, I left my flat and went for a walk - it was getting dark, the sun was setting, and I was walking either through sticky mud or slippery, melting snow. Still, I was able to take a breath - which I couldn't do in work-mode.⠀

If you're feeling stuck, leave the problem and come back to it later. There's a good chance it won't run away in the meantime. ⠀

For today's #bookcover #monday - a cover for "Det du ikke ser", "What you don't see" by Kristina Vedel Nielsen - a non-fiction book about living with ME/CFS - Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. ⠀

"Det du ikke ser" is the first book I've worked on that is specifically targeted towards people with disabilities, and I'm learning a lot about what makes text and book layout more accessible. It's not just about text size - other examples are making the leading a bit bigger, using spaces between paragraphs instead of indents. I've been educating myself about creating accessible more EPUBs as well - there's a great course by Nigel French on LinkedIn Learning if you're looking for some knowledge!⠀

Sometimes, when I spend too much time in front of a screen during the day, the idea of drawing on an Ipad in the evening makes my brain hurt - that's when I switch to a paper notebook. Within the last few months, I've gotten into the habit of drawing every evening - digitally when I want to draw something more complex, and traditionally whenever I want to do some simple studies or something just for fun.

Lately, I've been working on drawing heads from various angles - people looking upwards or downwards always made me confused! Things I learned so far:
🔸 Use lines for eyes, nose, mouth, and take your time to position them properly
🔸Think of the head in 3D, both as an entire shape, and of every piece separately. It's definitely worth it to spend some time figuring out how planes of the head work - Google William Nguyen on Arstation - he made a pretty kick-ass 3D model that really helps with this exercise!

I feel like I haven't done these in ages - I do a lot of gesture studies on a daily basis since I find it relaxing, but working on more-or-less rendered figures? Nah, too much effort. 😅 The result of that approach was that I kept drawing bodies that had parts which were too narrow, too wide, too short, too long - basically, all over the place. I needed to slow down and actually realize how much space each muscle takes, and how it fits in relation to all the other parts. I see a lot of mistakes in what I'm showing here, especially in the third - and most challenging - study, but hey, that's good - it means I'm learning! 😉 ⠀

Trying to learn too much, too fast is the second habit I've been trying to overcome besides the perfectionism. My motto for this year is "slow, but steady" - slowing down makes it possible to look at things in more detail, with more intensity, and often allows me to realise what I've been missing all along. ⠀
